BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College hosted its annual Mountaineer Invitational cross country meet Saturday along the mountain-side campus, welcoming 15 teams to Bennington for a great day of running. Castleton State University claimed the women's 5000 meter title while the hosting Mountaineers won the men's 5k race for the second time in three years.

Both individual champions hailed from Castleton as freshman Kaylyn Crompton won on the women's side with a time of 20:11 before junior Grandon Smith bested the rest of the men's participants at 17:38.

Runners for the men's race from MCLA included Christopher Gamble, who finished in sixth place overall.  Avery Woodbury was the next fastest Trailblazer coming in 16th.

On the women's side, MCLA was paced by Annie Gagnon (20th) and Jordan Daegatano (23rd).

A touch of Vermont fall could be felt in the air during the morning as the teams got loose and warmed up, but the bright-shining sun brought the temperatures into the low 70's by race time. The challenging course had been well maintained, giving all the runners a well-groomed but tough start to many of their seasons.
