Mooney appointed to NCAA Division III Management Council

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — Laura Mooney, director of athletics at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), has been appointed to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division III Management Council. The announcement became public at the NCAA National Convention, held last week in Nashville, Tenn.

"Laura Mooney is not only an outstanding Director of Athletics at MCLA but equally an effective college administrator," said MCLA President James F. Birge. "I am grateful, but not surprised, that the NCAA has recognized Laura by appointing her to the Management Council.  Laura will enhance the work of the Council just as she has elevated the work and reputation of MCLA Athletics."

Mooney is one of 19 members on the Council. Her appointment takes effect immediately, and will run through 2021. She said she is excited to promote MCLA and the Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC) in the process.

"I am honored to be selected to serve the membership in this capacity and to represent MCLA and the MASCAC," Mooney said. "I am looking forward to being part of positive change as the NCAA looks to further enhance and protect the student-athlete experience."

Mooney's role on the Council is to serve as the liaison to the Division III Membership Committee. As such, she will oversee the provisional and reclassifying membership process, educate active members and review waiver requests of membership requirements. She also will oversee the Division III Playing and Practice Seasons Subcommittee, whose purpose is to review playing and practice season issues, interpretations and proposed legislation that are relevant to the Division III membership.

The Management Council reports directly to the Presidents Council, and implements the policies adopted by the Association's Board of Governors and Division III Presidents Council. The Management Council may sponsor legislative proposals; make interpretations of Division III's bylaws; and may also handle resolution of Division III issues and recommendations from other committees and working groups throughout the Division's substructure.

The Council is comprised of Division III Chief Executive Officers, faculty athletics representatives, athletic directors, senior woman administrators, conference representatives and student-athletes. At least two members, except student-athletes, shall represent each DIII geographical region.
