Student Athlete Mentoring Program

Student Athlete Mentoring Program

2015-16 MCLA Student Athlete Mentors

Student-Athletes at MCLA have many opportunities to get involved.  One of those is to become involved in the Student Athlete Mentor (SAM) program.  The mission of the program is to better integrate athletics with academic and social life through mentoring fellow student-athletes.

SAM Activities include (and not limited to):

  • 3 times / semester
    • Study hall tutor-mentoring with Student-Athletes
    • One-on-one mentoring sessions with Student-Athletes
    • Leadership training/instruction conducted by faculty and staff
    • 2 times / semester
      • Community service at MCLA athletic and campus wide events
      • Student-Athlete Mentors (SAMs) at MCLA may support their peers by guiding them toward seeking educational resources on campus such as the Center for Student Success and Engagement (CSSE), the athletic department's Faculty Athletic Representative and the students' faculty advisors (SAMs may only informally discuss academic progress.  SAMs may not have access to their peers' academic records).
      • 1 time per semester
        • End of semester personal reflections of strengths and weaknesses of a SAM’s work.

Leadership Training Component: To instill good leadership skills and personal growth SAMs meet 3 times per semester

Membership: Selection based on nomination by Coach, Athletic Department staff, Professor, or self nomination (with a reference). Final approval by SAMs Advisors.
