New leads Baseball to sweep of Mount Saint Vincent
Yaphank, NY- The MCLA Baseball team received a complete game from senior ace Bobby New in taking the opener against Mount Saint Vincent 5-1 this afternoon at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. New would then record the save as the Trailblazers would complete the sweep with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
MCLA improves to 2-3 overall while the games marked the season opener for the Dolphins as they're now 0-2.
Game One-
New was the story in the opener as he allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters to even his mark at 1-1 on the early season. MCLA scored twice in the top of the first as Dan Buchanan singled home Jeff Bink for an unearned run and when Joe Toledo walked, it brought home Buchanan and MCLA led 2-0.
Bink delivered an RBI triple in the second inning to increase the lead to 3-0, but the Dolphins scored their lone run off New in the bottom half on an RBI single to cut it to 3-1 after two complete frames.
From there, New was outstanding. He retired the last eleven batters he faced and allowed only a fourth inning single the rest of the way. The offense gave him some breathing room as Austin Rachiele doubled in Toledo and when Bink drove in Rachiele, MCLA led 5-1 and cruised home.
Bink and Buchanan each ended with a pair of hits for MCLA. Rachiele scored twice for the Trailblazers.
Amir Nitowski took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent going just 2/3 of an inning.
Game Two-
In the nightcap, the Trailblazers surrendered a four run first inning as Michael Grisanti drilled a three run homer to stake the Dolphins to an early lead off MCLA starter Shawn James.
MCLA would creep back into however as they scratched across an unearned run in the second inning and then three more in the fourth to tie it up. Jake Ferrara started the three run fourth with an RBI walk and then Joe Toledo ripped a two run single to tie things up at 4-4.
The game would stay that way until the seventh inning when Christian Seariac delivered an RBI single up the middle scoring Bink to give the Trailblazers a 5-4 lead. MCLA, who would use four pitchers in the game, turned once again to New. The lefty nailed down the save by striking out the side and securing the MCLA sweep.
Seariac collected a pair of hits to lead the offense while Toledo drove in three runs. Mike Urbanski (1-0) pitched the sixth frame to earn his first collegiate win.
MCLA is now off until their annual Florida Trip. They begin play on Friday with a twinbill against SUNY Purchase.
