Baseball takes down Worcester State to earn first MASCAC victory

WORCESTER, Mass.—The MCLA Baseball team snapped a nine-game losing streak this afternoon at Rockwood Park taking game one of a three-game weekend series against Worcester State, 5-4. With the win The Trailblazers improve to 7-11 (1-3 MASCAC) while the Lancers fall to 6-12 (2-2 MASCAC).

After a two-out single and stolen base by Ty Mazzeo (4-for-4), a Josh Bologh (1-for-3, RBI) base hit would give MCLA a 1-0 lead after two. The Trailblazers would add another in the 3rd inning on a Clarence Givhans (3-for-5, RBI) solo homerun to make it 2-0.

An MCLA error and two doubles by Worcester State's Chris Ausiello and Tom Halliwell would propel the Lancers to four runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to go ahead 4-2.

The Trailblazers would draw back to even at 4-4 after three consecutive singles by Austin Rachiele, Givhans and Randy Adams (1-for-5, 2 RBIs) in the top of the 5th and would retake the lead in the top of the 6th when Bologh scored thanks to a William Walsh RBI double to make it 5-4.

MCLA starting pitcher Nate Morse (W, 1-1) and reliever Garrett Brunette (S, 1) as well as the Trailblazer defense would shut the Lancers down the rest of the way allowing only 2 baserunners and one hit.

Morse allowed 7 hits and four runs, two earned, and struck out three in six innings pitched to earn his first win of the season. Brunette went the final 3 innings, not allowing a hit, while striking out three batters for the save.

Worcester State's Ben Smith (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Lancers allowing 5 earned runs, on ten hits, striking out seven batters.
