Bridgewater State Completes Weekend Sweep, Taking Two from Baseball today

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The MCLA Baseball team wrapped up their MASCAC series with the Bridgewater State Bears this afternoon at Alumni Park. The Bears combined for 40 runs and 35 hits taking game #1 22-3 and game #2 18-3.

  • Series History: Bridgewater State leads the all-time series 72-36. The Bears won game #1 of this series on Friday by a score of 9-1 in North Adams. The teams split a doubleheader the first time they met on May 3, 1972, with MCLA winning the first game 2-1, and Bridgewater winning the second game 7-1 on May 3, 1972, in Bridgewater.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

  • Game #1
    • During the first game of the day Bridgewater State spread their offense out, scoring at least one run in all six frames that they went to bat, and scoring multiple runs in four of them, including six runs in the third inning and eight in the fifth.
    • MCLA scored their first run in the top of the third to cut their deficit at the time to 3-1. William Walsh (Maynard, MA) started things with a one out single through the middle and moved to second on a single by Ben Jacob (Pittsfield, MA). Both would advance another base on a wild pitch before an RBI groundout by Matthew Castillo (Ozone Park, NY) brought Walsh home.
    • The Trailblazers added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when Castillo led off with a five pitch walk. Two batters later Chris Vargas (Queens Park, NY) crushed the first pitch he saw to straight away center field for his team leading sixth homerun of the year.
    • The Bears had eight extra base hits, including two doubles and a homer by Ryan Flaherty.
    • Jaden Arruda went six innings for Bridgewater, allowing on three runs on three hits to improve his record to 3-0. MCLA starter Nate Morse fell to 3-6 with the loss.
  • Game #2
    • For the second game of the day, the Bears shoved the majority of their offense into one inning, plating 15 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the first inning.
    • The Trailblazers scored their three runs all in the third inning. Joshua Bissaillon (East Greenbush, NY) drove home Jacob and George Feliz (New York, NY) with a single to rightfield and Roshan Warriar brought Castillo home with an RBI groundout.
    • Bridgewaters' Shane Handrahan went the first five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four to pick up the victory and moving his record to 4-1. Cam Harrington (Pittsfield, MA) suffered the loss, falling to 0-2.

UP NEXT:

On Tuesday, MCLA will be back in action when it travels down Route 2 to Bobby Coombs Field and Williams College for a non-conference matchup with the Ephs. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
