Young's strong play leads MCLA at NAC Championships

Georgetown, Mass. - Salem State came from one-stroke back to overtake Husson on the second day of the 2014 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Golf Championship to claim the school's first conference title.

Dealing with a 25-mph wind, and cold temperatures at the Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown, Mass, the Vikings, who shot a 306 on the opening day, turned in an impressive final round score of 316 to record a tournament-best 625 and earn the NAC automatic bid to the NCAA Championships this spring. The Eagles, finished just seven strokes behind on day two, finishing with a score of 631, ending their eight-year championship run. Castleton turned in the second best team-score of the day (319) to finish in third with a two-day total of 635.

Maine Maritime (649) finished in fourth place, and was followed by UMaine-Farmington (696), MCLA (735), and Johnson State (842) to complete the field for the NAC Championship.

Nick Young had a solid weekend for MCLA following up a first round 76 with an 81 in the blustery conditions Sunday. His play earned him a tie for sixth place.

Husson's Greg Martin (pictured left) earned medalist honors after turning in a stellar 1-under-par (71) on Day 2 to finish the tournament at 146 (+2). Maine Maritime's Keenan Kalthoff, who topped the leader board on day one finished three strokes back with a 149 (+5). Salem State's Tom MacPherson (153) took third for Salem State. Rounding out the top five was Greg Pike from Husson and Dan Hogan from Castleton, who both shot a 156.
