Golf opens play at NAC Championships, Final round tomorrow

RUTLAND, Vt. – The opening day of the North Atlantic Conference Championship at the Rutland Country Club took place this afternoon despite inclement weather, as the Husson Eagles took a two-stroke lead after shooting a team score of 312 (+32).

The Eagles, who have won nine of the last ten NAC titles, held off a late surge from the defending champions, Salem St., who finished the opening round just two strokes back with a score of 314. The tournament hosts, Castleton University, came home 13 strokes back with a 325, followed by Maine Maritime (331), Maine-Farmington (341) and Johnson St. (364). MCLA and Green Mountain College concluded the first-day standings with respective totals of 390   

MCLA was paced by Nick Young's 83 which places him 14th heading into final round action.  Sam Slocumbe was next best with a 91.
Husson's Greg Martin and Dalton Wickenden along with Salem St.'s Tyler Conigliari sit atop the leaderboard after each individual finished today's round with a three-over 73. Martin shot the lone eagle of the round on a par-five from 481 yards out, while Wickenden and Conigliari finished with two birdies apiece.


Castleton's Zach Temple ended the day four strokes off the pace with a seven-over 77, while Maine Maritime's Kevin Pepin posted an eight-over 78 to place fifth and remain in contention for medalist honors.


The second round of the 2015 NAC Championship will get underway on Saturday at 8:24 am when Green Mountain and MCLA tee off first. Those two schools will be followed by Johnson St., Maine-Farmington and Maine Maritime before Castleton, Salem St. and Husson pair up for the final rounds of the day.
