Trailblazers handle Lyndon State in NAC action

ST. ALBANS, Vt. – The Lyndon State College men's tennis team dropped its second North Atlantic Conference match Saturday in an 8-1 loss to MCLA at the Collins Perley Sport and Fitness.

The Trailblazers took a 2-1 lead after doubles as Aaron Goldsmith and Robert Wabshinak fought off Tyler Hall (Keene, N.H.) and Jake LaCerda (Gray, Maine) 8-4 in No. 1 doubles and Robert Gair and Jared Freeman topped Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, Vt.) and Bradley Shumway (Bloomingdale, N.Y.) 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.  Michael Sigsbury (Pownal, Vt.) and Dylan Cherko (Manchester, Conn.) won the lone match for the Hornets with an 8-3 victory over Andrew Nygard and Jeffrey Mason in No. 2 doubles.

Goldsmith gained his second victory at top singles 6-4, 6-3 over Hall.  Nygard took No. 3 singles over Sigsbury in a marathon match 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.  Gair prevailed over Mulligan 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in No. 5 singles while Freeman downed Ken Niemann (Au Sable Forks, N.Y.) 6-4, 6-2 in No. 6 singles.

Mason topped Cherko in a pro set 8-3 in No. 4 singles and Wabshinak defeated LaCerda 6-0, 4-2 in the No. 2 singles match that was cut short due to time constraints.

The Hornets (1-7, 0-2 NAC) host Castleton tomorrow, April 9 at 12:00 p.m. at Collins Perley Sport and Fitness.

The Trailblazers (1-1, 1-1 NAC) travel to Thomas for a 12:00 p.m. start tomorrow as well.
