Trailblazer Tennis falls in non league match with Green Mountain 5-4

RUTLAND, Vt. – Green Mountain men's tennis team produced a tight 5-4 non-conference victory over MCLA on Thursday afternoon at Mac-Sam Tennis as each team closed out its regular season schedule.

Green Mountain (6-6, 2-4 NAC East) was powered by Eric Wade, Javier Lugris and Pierce Caldwell who each generated two wins on the afternoon. Aaron Goldsmith and Robert Wabshinak accounted for three of the Trailblazers' four points in the loss.

MCLA (4-6, 3-3 NAC East) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with Goldsmith and Wabshinak earning an 8-4 win in top flight doubles over Truman Cressey and Kei Sako. Green Mountain would take the lead at 2-1 after the conclusion of doubles play as Lugris and Dakota Dodson claimed No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win over Robert Gair and Jared Freeman while Eric Wade and Pierce Caldwell emerged victorious in third flight doubles with an 8-6 decision over Jack Peterson and Mohamed Mahrous.

Goldsmith and Wabshinak gave the visitors the lead once again at 3-2 as Goldsmith upended Cressey in top flight singles with a pair of 6-3 wins while Wabshinak took down Kei Sako in second flight singles in a tightly contested match, 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 10-8.

The Eagles rallied through the remaining singles matches earning three out of four points to eke past the Trailblazers.

Wade posted a pair of 6-4 set wins to down Gair in third flight singles, while Lugris eased past Peterson in No. 4 singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Caldwell clinched the match taking the No. 5 singles match from Freeman, 6-4, 6-3.Mahrous closed out the match with a marathon win in sixth flight singles over Daisuke Kon, 5-7, 10-6, 10-8.

Green Mountain closes out the year just outside of the NAC East Tournament while MCLA earns the final spot and will face Colby-Sawyer in the semifinals.
