Mixed Tennis drops nailbiter at Castleton 5-4

Rutland, VT- The Castleton University tennis team nipped the MCLA Trailblazers 5-4 this afternoon in non conference action.  With the win, the Spartans even their mark at 2-2 while the Trailblazers fall to 1-2 on the early season.  

Castleton took command by winning the first two doubles matches.  Igor Almeida and Nate Hinson defeated Charles Najimy and Matt Bluteau in the top doubles matchup 8-1 for the first point of the match.  Castleton's Levi Williams and Tripp Norris would handle Nick Castle and Sam Gawron in the second doubles slot to put the Spartans up 2-0.

MCLA would earn their first point when the duo of Briana Higgins and Mackenna Jordan defeated Riley Laughlin and Spencer Butter 8-4 slicing the deficit to 2-1 heading into singles play.

Almeida earned his second point of the afternoon with a straight set singles win over Najimy while Williams would defeat Castle as well to put the Spartans on top 4-1.  

Gawron earned a point for MCLA by besting Norris 6-0, 6-2 to make it 4-2 in favor of Castleton.

Spencer Butter would earn the deciding point in his matchup with Higgins winning 6-3, 6-4.

Bluteau and Mohamed Mahrous would earn singles points to round out the scoring in the match.

MCLA is now off for spring break and won't return to the courts until March 28th when they take on Sage.
