Softball falls to Wesleyan and Buena Vista in Florida

Clermont, FL- The MCLA softball team had a tough day on Sunday as they fell to Wesleyan (CT) 11-3 in the opener before falling 13-1 to Buena Vista in the nightcap in Clermont, FL as part of the PFX Games.  The Trailblazers are now 0-8 heading into the trip finale tomorrow afternoon.

In the opener against Wesleyan, the Cardinals got off to a strong start.  Wesleyan tallied five times in the first inning to jump out to quick 5-0 lead over the Trailblazers.  They would add two more runs in the fourth to stretch to a 7-0 lead before MCLA finally mustered up some offense.

In the top of the fifth, MCLA scored three times.  Erika Quackenbush belted a two run double and another scored on a Cardinal error to make it 7-3.  The Cardinals however, answered immediately in the bottom half to end the game.   They scored four times to put the game out of reach via the mercy rule.

MCLA was paced by Chelsea Coleman who had a pair of hits in the contest.  Quackenbush took the loss on the mound for the Trailblazers.

In the late game with Buena Vista, MCLA scored in the top of the first for a quick 1-0 lead.   Kaitlyn Berghela singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Quackenbush.  MCLA starting pitcher Kara Adams would keep the score at 1-0 thru two innings before Buena Vista took off.

The Beavers would score seven times in the top of the third to seize control and grab a 7-1 lead.  Buena Vista would take advantage of some shotty defense from MCLA in the frame as the Trailblazers committed three errors in the frame.  Buena Vista would continue the barrage just an inning later, this time scoring six runs in the fourth.

MCLA couldn't muster enough offense and the game was called after five innings.

Adams absorbed the loss for MCLA on the mound while the Trailblazers had just three hits on the afternoon.

The Trailblazers wrap up the Florida swing tomorrow when they challenge Bowdoin and Lawrence University.
