Softball drops a pair of games at Fitchburg State in MASCAC action

Fitchburg, MA- The MCLA Trailblazer softball program dropped a pair of MASCAC games this afternoon falling to Fitchburg State 9-1 in the five inning opener and 7-3 in the nightcap.  The Trailblazers fall to 2-18 on the season and 0-6 in MASCAC play.  The Falcons improve to 9-11 and are 4-2 in league play.

In the opener, the Trailblazers jumped in front 1-0 after a half an inning.  Katelyn Berghela singled and advanced to second on an error.  After Erika Quackenbush singled to load the bases, Alex Romano earned a one out walk to score the games first run.   MCLA wasted a golden chance for more runs, but consecutive strikeouts ended the frame.

The Falcons promptly tied the game in the bottom of the first and then took control with two runs in the second and four in the third.  Fitchburg had 8 hits over the two innings and increased the lead to 7-1.  FSU would score two more runs in the fifth to earn the mercy rule victory over the Trailblazers.

Berghela ended with a pair of hits to pace the offense as MCLA was outhit 14-5 by Fitchburg.  Morgan Watson was tabbed with the loss going just two innings.

In game two, the Trailblazers lost 7-3.  Fitchburg wasted little time taking control jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.  MCLA would get one run back in the third, but Fitchburg matched it to lead 6-1 after three.  They would add another in the fourth before MCLA finally plated two runs in the seventh to draw a touch closer.  However they couldn't get any closer to complete a comeback.

Ashley Wilson was the lone Trailblazer with two hits in the nightcap.  Quackenbush took the loss for MCLA in game two.  Kara Adams threw the final 5.2 innings for MCLA.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Williams College at noon.
