Holliday has three hits but MCLA Softball drops season opener to UMass Dartmouth 8-3

Clermont, FL- The MCLA softball team opened up their season this afternoon at the PFX games as they took on UMass Dartmouth in the 2018 opener.  The Trailblazers fell to the Corsairs by a score of 8-3 at Hancock Park.  The Trailblazers drop to 0-1 on the season while the Corsairs improve to 5-2 overall.

UMD took control early on the plated a run in the first inning as they took advantage of some MCLA jitters.  They used a pair of errors to take a quick 1-0 advantage after one inning.   They would tack on another in the second on Maddie O'Gryzek's RBI single.  The Corsairs would add two more in the third when Annika Evensen single home Emily Colton and then Brittany Polk doubled home another run making it 4-0. 

UMass Dartmouth added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 advantage.  They would round out the scoring with a pair of runs in the home sixth.

MCLA scored an unearned run in the fifth inning before added two in the final frame as Kaitlyn Berghela's RBI triple to right field scored Kayla Baker, who slapped a single to start the frame.  Kaylyn Holliday then drove her home with her third hit of the day.

Starting pitcher Victoria Woodward tossed the first five innings allowing just 5 hits and striking out 7 Trailblazers to record the win.  Evensen led the Corsair offense with three hits while O'Gryzek and Colton each had two safeties.

MCLA first year hurler Sam Feinstein was tagged with the loss.  Kaylyn Holliday had three hits for the Trailblazers to lead the offense.

UMD outhit MCLA 12-8 on the afternoon.

The Trailblazers take on Lasell later this evening at 7pm.
