Softball can't get any offense going in pair of losses to Fitchburg State
Williamstown, MA- The visiting Fitchburg State softball team received a pair of solid pitching performances from Emma Campbell and Mikayla Harnois as they led the Falcons to a convincing sweep of the Trailblazers. Harnois earned the win out of the bullpen in a game one 10-1 victory while Campbell went the distance in a 6-1 nightcap. The Falcons even their overall mark at 9-9 and remain perfect at 4-0 in the MASCAC.
MCLA drops to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Game One-
Fitchburg started fast in the opener jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead after just 1.5 innings. Cammi Sperling's RBI single in the first inning got things started off MCLA hurler Morgan Watson and when McKenzie Lambert and Melissa DiPhilippo had RBI knocks in the second, it was 3-0 Falcons. The Trailblazers got their lone run in the bottom of the second on Ashley Wilson's pinch hit single slicing the lead to just 3-1.
The score would remain that way until the fifth inning when the Falcons tallied four runs. DiPhilippo had another RBI hit as did Maddie Medina and Nicole Sylvester. The Falcons brought the fourth run of the inning home when they converted a first and third delayed steal making it 8-1. They would add two more runs in the seventh to finish the scoring.
While the Falcon offense was coming to life, Harnois was cruising. She entered the game in the second inning and went the next 5.1 innings. She allowed just 4 hits and struck out a pair of MCLA hitters to earn the win and improve to 3-3.
Watson absorbed the loss and MCLA was outhit 15-7 in the contest.
Lambert was 3-5 in the opener with three runs scored while Hayley McCarthy went 3-4. Sylvester, Sperling, and Maddie Medina all had two hits.
Game Two-
Campbell was the story in game two as she silenced the Trailblazer offense holding them to just 8 hits and striking out 4 MCLA batters. She improves to 3-3 on the season.
Campbell also helped jumpstart the Falcon offense by delivering a two run single to left field in the second inning for an early 2-0 lead. Sperling increased the lead to 3-0 on an RBI single in the third inning and when Lambert lofted a sacrifice fly, it was 4-0 after four innings.
The Falcons would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a long home run from Lambert.
The Trailblazers would claim their lone run of the game on Kaylyn Holliday's single to centerfield in the fifth inning scoring Katelyn Berghela.
The Falcons outhit MCLA 11-8 in the nightcap. Sperling, Hayley McCarthy, and Campbell all had two hits to lead the offense.
Nevada Nelsen had a pair of hits for MCLA. Samantha Feinstein went the distance but absorbed the loss for MCLA.
