North Adams, MA- Behind ten strong innings from pitcher Natalie Sorrenti, the Bridgewater State Softball team swept MCLA this afternoon in a pair of MASCAC contests at the Zavattaro Complex. The Bears used an eight run 3rd inning on their way to a 13-1 decision in game one, and were able to capitalize on five Trailblazer errors in game two pulling away for a 9-1 victory. MCLA drops to 6-18 overall and 2-8 in the MASCAC while the Bears improve to 14-16 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
The Bears struck right away as leadoff hitter Samantha Mulcahy took MCLA starting pitcher Samantha Feinstein deep for her 2nd homerun of the season. Feinstein recovered nicely retiring the next three batters in order and seemed to settle in.
However, after a scoreless bottom of the inning Bridgewater would add four runs in the top of the 2nd as Jenny Heller and Tabitha Domeij each had RBI doubles and teammate Meghan Navarro singled to center scoring two making it 5-0.
In the top of the 3rd Bridgewater State's Jenny Heller started the big inning off with solo shot with one out. Heller would finish the day 3-for 4 (as would her teammate Alexandra Ruprecht) with 4 RBI's. The next six hitters would reach base as the Bears batted around scoring 8 runs on 7 hits making the score 13-0. Bridgewater would register16 hits in game one.
A Kaitlyn Berghela single and Kaylyn Holliday double would lead to MCLA's only run in the bottom of the 5th as Bridgewater pitcher Natalie Sorrenti scattered six hits, striking out four on her way to her 5th win of the season. Feinstein would go the distance and take the loss for the Trailblazers.
Samantha Mulcahy would again score the game's first run in game two. However this time she would reach base via catcher's interference, take second on a sacrifice bunt and by forcing an errant throw as she headed for third, she would score giving the Bears an early 1-0 advantage.
Untimely errors would plague the Trailblazers throughout the contest. A fielding error with two outs in the top of the 3rd would open the floodgates again in that inning as it did in game one leading to 5 Bear runs highlighted by Kacie Carvalho's 2 RBI single.
The miscues continued in the 4th as a bases loaded wild pitch allowed Tabitha Domeij to score making it 7-0. The Bears would load the bases again in the top of the 5th and would score twice more on Heller and Ruprecht singles.
Battling to end once more, a two out Kaitlyn Berghela triple in the bottom of the 5th would score Fran Belli for the Trailblazers only run.
Bridgewater pitcher Natalie Sorrenti earning her second decision of the day, moved to 6-1 on the season and was again impressive only allowing 3 Trailblazer hits. Pitcher Kara Adams would take the loss for MCLA.
MCLA will next host MASCAC rival Westfield State Tuesday for a doubleheader at 2pm.
