Softball drops a pair of close games in Clermont

Clermont, FL- The MCLA softball team dropped a pair of tough contests this afternoon in the Spring games in Clermont, FL.  The Trailblazers fell to St. Lawrence 7-5 in the opener before dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Wesleyan (CT) in the nightcap.  MCLA is now 1-7 on the season.

Game One- St. Lawrence 7 – MCLA 5

MCLA got on the board in the top of the first inning when Erika Quackenbush singled home Kaitlyn Berghela for an early 1-0 lead.  St. Lawrence would answer though with three runs in the bottom half off of MCLA starter Kara Adams to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Trailblazers would score a pair of runs in the second to knot things up at 3-3 as Adams tripled and scored Alanza Quinones and Sam Feinstein drove home Adams.  The Saints would answer in the bottom half on Angelina Carney's three run homer to take a 6-3 lead after just two innings.

From there, MCLA added a run on a Berghela RBI triple, but Carney homered for the second time to make it 7-4.  MCLA wouldn't go quietly however as they scored a run in the sixth to pull within 7-5.  The Trailblazers would have the tying runs in scoring position in the seventh, but couldn't get the key hit giving the Saints the win.

Caroline Young earned the win for the Saints tossing the first four innings.  McKailey Lyndaker earned a three inning save.

Adams took the loss for MCLA while Quackenbush led the offense with three hits.  Kaylyn Holliday and Adams each had two hits as well.

Game Two- Wesleyan (CT) 2 – MCLA 1

Wesleyan scored a pair of runs in the second inning off Trailblazer starter Kara Adams for a 2-0 lead.  MCLA responded in the third as Kaylyn Holliday hit a ball off the top of the fence, narrowly missing a home run, but scoring Quackenbush to cut the margin to 2-1.

MCLA's Sam Feinstein came out of the bullpen and threw three scoreless innings before the Cardinals increased the lead in the seventh.  Wesleyan loaded the bases on three straight singles and then scored a run on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.  Feinstein avoided further damage by inducing another force out and pop up to end the inning.

Holliday was a perfect 3-3 to pace the MCLA offense.  Adams suffered the loss on the mound.

MCLA is back in action on Thursday with another doubleheader to close the Florida swing.

Lauren Gaffney-Gomez went the distance for Wesleyan to earn the win.
