MCLA drops second half opener at Union 76-72

Schenectady, NY- The MCLA women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Union College beat the Trailblazers 76-72 in Schenectady.  With the setback, MCLA is now 7-4 heading into MASCAC play.  Jen Wehner collected her seventh straight double double for the Trailblazers.

Union Senior guard Leah Pepe scored a game high 16 points while senior center Lauren McCormick added 14 with eight rebounds in the victory. 

Mary Donohue had 12 points and a career high eight assists and Lauren Hennessey pulled down nine rebounds while freshman Marissa Ray added 10 points. Union, now 4-3, played for the first time since a December 14 home game vs. Utica. Union shot 44% and forced 17 turnovers.

Wehner had a game high 14 rebounds to go with 15 points. Alie Dobrovolc scored 13 with seven boards and Hilary Perks dished out seven assists with 10 points. Kaitlyn Chenevert added 10 points.  MCLA had a 39-37 rebounding edge for the night.

Union had a 15 point lead at halftime, 39-24. The Trailblazers pulled to within seven at 53-46 with 11:58 left on a layup by Lucy Tremblay. Union added to the lead but a three by Tremblay at 8:25 made it a seven point game again at 63-56. After trailing by seven yet again, at 74-67, Perks made a three with 24 seconds left to get the Trailblazers to within four at 74-70, the closest since midway through the first half. But Ray made two free throws in the final 13 seconds, and a Perks layup came with two seconds left to provide the final.

MCLA opens conference play on Saturday when they travel to Worcester State for the MASCAC opener.
