Women's Basketball drops third straight game, fall to Curry 59-50

Milton, MA- The Curry College women's basketball team shot out to a 21-11 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat the MCLA Trailblazers 59-50 in non conference action this evening at Katz Gymnasium.  The Colonels improve to 3-2 while MCLA drops their third straight contest in falling to 1-3.

Curry's Nicole Rice and Molly Plunkett came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points apiece.  

MCLA actually led 9-4 early on, however Curry would outscore the Trailblazers 17-2 for the remainder of the period.  Plunkett drilled a pair of three pointers to start the spurt while Rice knocked down the final hoop of the quarter giving the Colonels a 21-11 lead.

MCLA cut the margin to just 27-23 late in the second quarter, but Curry answered with a Rice triple to take a 30-23 lead at halftime.

The Trailblazers got within six once in the third quarter, but Plunkett and Rice both connected on key three pointers to keep them at bay.  Curry held a double digit lead for much of the fourth quarter as MCLA couldn't get closer than eight points.

Rice was 6-9 from the floor and 2-2 from deep for her 16 point night.  Plunkett was just 6-16 from the field, but a solid 4-9 from beyond the arc.  Emily Irwin notched 10 points and snagged a game best 12 rebounds for Curry.  The Colonels shot 37% in the win and overcame 22 turnovers.

MCLA was paced by Mckenzie Robinson's 15 point night.  She scored 12 of her points in the opening half as she was 6-12 from the field and canned a trio of three pointers.  Karina Mattera came alive in the second half scoring 12 of her 15 points.  She buried 3-4 triples in the contest.  L'Rae Brundige earned the start and responded with 10 points for MCLA.

The Trailblazers were set back by 26 turnovers and shot just 33% from the field.

MCLA is back in action on Wednesday when they return to the campus center and host Utica College.
