Women's Basketball struggles from floor in 49-42 loss to Bridgewater State

North Adams, MA- The visiting Bridgewater State University women's basketball team held MCLA to 31% shooting and Chanelle Melton scored a game high 14 points to lead the Bears to a 49-42 win over the Trailblazers in MASCAC action.  With the win, the Bears improve to 7-13 overall and earn a sweep over the Trailblazers in league play as they are now 3-4 in the conference.  MCLA drops to 6-14 overall and is 2-6 in the league.

MCLA led 12-8 after one quarter, but BSU took over in the second frame.  They started the second quarter with an 11-0 spurt and when Nicole Bostick canned a three, they led 19-12.  They eventually led 27-21 at halftime.  

Bridgewater State never trailed in the second half.  MCLA got within four points at 29-25 with 6:35 left in the third quarter, but the Bears would respond with a 16-5 spurt over the next eleven minutes of action to open up their largest lead of the night at 45-30 with just 6:27 left to play.  MCLA would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Melton collected her 14 points on 6-11 shooting.  She ended a rebound shy of a triple double with 9 boards.  Rhiana Page had 9 points and 4 assists.  Sara DaSilva netted 8 points and also had 4 assists for the Bears.  Bridgewater overcame a 36% shooting night and 16 turnovers.

MCLA was paced by Emily Moulton and Sam Gawron who each ended with a team best 12 points.  Moulton added 8 rebounds.

The Trailblazers were hampered by the cold shooting night while the Bears defense forced 12 turnovers.

MCLA will be on the road again on Saturday as they head to Worcester State.
