Trailblazer women suffer loss at Worcester State 67-48

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State women's basketball team held visiting MCLA to just 16 first half points as they cruised past the Trailblazers 67-48 in MASCAC action.  The Lancers are now 12-9 overall and are 6-3 in the MASCAC.  MCLA drops to 6-15 overall and is 2-7 in the league.

Worcester was led by Kaitlyn Berkel's team best 12 point night.  She added 4 rebounds and 4 assists.  Brianna Hackett notched 11 points while Britt Herring collected 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win. 

Sam Gawron matched her career high with 19 points to lead the Trailblazers.  Courtney Pingelski was the only other player in double figures with 11 points, all of which came after halftime.

MCLA led early at 3-2 after Mckenzie Robinson's three pointer, but the Lancers responded with a 9-0 spurt to seize control at 11-3.  They eventually led 19-8 after the quarter.  MCLA got within single digits in the second quarter, but once again the Lancers had the answer.  With the score at 26-16, Worcester scored the final five points to take a 31-16 lead into the locker room.  The Lancers held MCLA to just 23% shooting in the half.

The Trailblazers heated up a bit in the third quarter, but so did the Lancers.  MCLA got within ten again at 39-29, but Worcester once again responded, this time with a 7-2 spurt to take a 46-31 lead into the fourth quarter.  The Lancers were never threatened over the final ten minutes as they increased their lead to as large as 24 points before settling on the final score.

Gawron went 9-18 from the floor for her 19 point afternoon.  She added 5 rebounds.  MCLA shot just 33% while the Lancers converted on a 44% clip.

MCLA turned it over 20 times, while the Lancers had 15, but only 3 in the second half of play.

The Trailblazers will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host Fitchburg State.
