WLax tripped up by Mass. Maritime 11-6 in MASCAC opener

Westfield, MA- The Massachusetts Maritime women's lacrosse team received a hat trick from Janine Prokscha and keeper Mikayla Correia stopped 11 shots in leading the Buccaneers past the MCLA Trailblazers 11-6 in a match played at Westfield State this afternoon.  The game was the MASCAC opener for both teams and MMA improves to 3-2 overall while MCLA drops to 2-3.

The Trailblazers struck first when Katelyn Brown tallied six minutes into the contest, but the Bucs would answer with six straight markers fueled by Prokscha's pair of goals.  MCLA's Rebecca Pike finally broke the streak, however MMA would net the last two goals of the half as Molly Smith converted both times to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.

In the closing half, both teams struggled to score.  MMA would extend the lead to 9-2 on Christina Murphy's goal with 27:58 left, but the visitors then went cold letting MCLA back into the game.  Over the next 19 minutes, MCLA outscored MMA 4-0 to get within 9-6 on Natalie Caney's only goal of the game with 8:02 left to play.

The Buccaneers would finally answer though, as Prokscha once again found the net with 6:21 left and Stephanie Hunt tallied with four minutes remaining to put the game out of reach.

Ashley Solari, Smith, and Murphy all finished with a pair of goals.  Correia was stout in net all game as she improved to 3-2 on the season.  MMA overcame 31 turnovers to earn the victory.

Brown led MCLA with three goals and Pike ended with two.  Alexandra David stopped five shots in goal for the Trailblazers, who owned a slim 18-15 edge in groundballs and 12-7 margin in draw controls.

The Trailblazers will look to get back on track on Wednesday when they battle Southern Vermont.
