Lacrosse ends season with 20-9 loss against Salem State

North Adams, MA- Visiting Salem State received five goals each from Erin Riley and Courtney Smith as they rolled past the MCLA Trailblazers on senior day this afternoon from Shewcraft Field.  With the win, the Vikings improve to 7-8 on the season and finish at 2-5 in the conference.  The Trailblazers end their season at 3-11 and 0-7 in the MASCAC.

Early on, the two teams started fast.  MCLA held a slim 2-1 edge just three minutes into the contest on the heels of goals from Natalie Caney and Mackenzie Cutler.  The Vikings would respond though scoring eight straight goals to seize control.

Riley began the spurt with a pair of goals while Smith would connect on the next two to spur the run.  Riley would net two more tallies in the spurt and when Smith converted with 13:10 left, the Vikings held a 9-2 lead.

The teams would trade goals until halftime and Salem would eventually hold a 13-5 lead at the break.

In the second half, they traded goals again to start, but then the visitors rattled off three in a row to put the game out of reach at 18-7 and never were threatened from there.

The Vikings held a 37-22 shot advantage over the Trailblazers led by they duo of Riley and Smith who combined for 13 shots.  They also held a 23-14 edge in ground balls.

Jenn Toussaint earned the win in net stopping six shots as she improved to 7-8.

Caney paced MCLA with four goals and an assist for five points.  Cutler ended the game with three markers.

Zoe Elwell took the loss for MCLA stopping ten shots.

Prior to the contest, MCLA honored its five seniors in Tanelle Ciempa, Erin McNulty, Gabriella Prata, Erinn Rayno, and Zoe Schwartz.

The Vikings will enter the MASCAC tournament as the sixth seed and travel to third seeded Fitchburg on Tuesday night at 7pm.
