Lacrosse drops 16-7 decision to MASCAC foe Salem State

Salem, Mass. – Chelsea Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored five goals and added two assists as Salem State dominated MCLA 16-7 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings improve to 3-8 and 2-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Trailblazers slip to 3-7 and 0-3 in league play.
Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) and Chelsea Smith gave Salem State an early 2-0 lead. However, back-to-back goals by Mackenzie Cutler (East Amherst, N.Y.) and Aleah Sangiovanni (Pittsfield, Mass.) tied the score at the 19:08 mark for MCLA. Kim Granito (Glenmont, N.Y.) grabbed a 3-2 lead for the Trailblazers until the Vikings ripped off six straight goals to take an 8-3 lead. Smith and Woodin each notched their second goals of the game while Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) and Rose Sullivan (Charlestown, Mass.) both added scores.
Courtney Smith tallied her second of the game while Woodin notched a hat-trick, giving Salem State a five-goal lead with 4:07 remaining in the first. Chelsea Smith, Courtney Smith and Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, N.Y.) all netted goals before halftime as the Vikings, who went on a 9-0 run, built an 11-3 halftime lead.
Samatha Barrett (Arlington, Mass.) added another goal before Chelsea Smith and Woodin each registered their fourth goal of the game to increase Salem State's lead to 14-4. Cutler ended Saled State's 12-0 run, putting in her second score of the game for MCLA before Courtney Smith tallied her fourth point of the day, giving Salem State a 15-4 lead.
Granito netted three straight scores for the Trailblazers in just over three minutes of action to cut the deficit to 15-7. Chelsea Smith closed the scoring with her team-high seventh point to make the final 16-7.
Karlie McLear (Paxton, Mass.) made six saves in the win while Zoe Elwell (Clifton Park, N.Y.) stopped eight shots in one-half of action. Julia Coughlin (Wolfeboro, N.H.) came in in the second half for MCLA, making four saves while allowing five goals.
Salem State travels to Fitchburg State on Tuesday for a 7:00 PM game. MCLA hosts Worcester State on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
