MCLA Shewcraft Field Lights Initiative

MCLA Shewcraft Field Lights Initiative

Make a Gift to the Shewcraft Field Lights Initiative

As part of the Sowing Seeds for Success Campaign for the future, beginning January 2014, MCLA introduced an initiative to construct lights on the Shewcraft Field, a state-of-the-art turf surface, which opened in 2007. With an estimated cost of $400,000, the College set a goal of $200,000 with a 1:1 match over a two year period. Shewcraft Field is home to both MCLA soccer programs, while also serving as a major benefactor of both the baseball and softball programs for spring practice.

The field bears the name of longtime Men's Soccer Coach Ron Shewcraft.  Shewcraft tallied a whopping 292 career victories during his career in North Adams.  He led the program to their only final four appearance in 1978, while also earning 16 postseason appearances over the course of his 30 year tenure.  He captured five MASCAC championships and coached 25 All Region players.  For all his accolades, he was inducted in to the Athletics Hall of Fame in February 2014.

Shewcraft retired from coaching following the 2006-07 academic year.  He is still a member of the MCLA Faculty, serving as the chair of the Physical Education department, which is now housed within Biology.

The Shewcraft Field Lights Initiative will not only impact athletics at MCLA, but all students.  Shewcraft Field is currently used by both Men's and Women's Soccer programs, Women's Lacrosse, and a practice facility for Baseball and Softball.  With the addition of lights, there will be more opportunities for student use such as intramural activities and events, student gatherings and functions, and many other areas.  The Lights will also extend practice and playing times for all sport and intramural offerings.
