HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game #1
- Salem State scored the first run of the game in the second inning when the Vikings' Ryan Bourgeois drove the first pitch he saw out to straight away left field.
- In the top of the fourth inning, Salem added to their lead, plating three runs on one hit. Yabdriel Gonzalez started the one out rally by working a six pitch walk. An error allowed Dylan Adamson to reach with Gonzalez moving to second before Bourgeois earned the Vikings second walk of the inning to load the bases. Gonzalez then scored on a passed ball that allowed all three runners to advance. Derek Angell's bloop two RBI single stretched the lead to 4-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, MCLA responded with a pair of runs on three hits. Senior catcher Josh Bologh (Waterbury, CT) opened the inning with a single to right-center. Freshman shortstop Roshan Warriar (Pittsfield, MA) moved him along with a single to right and then senior outfielder Joe Sardo (Great Neck, NY) loaded the bases when his sac bunt to third was air mailed to first. Junior first baseman Chris Vargas (Queens Park, NY) lofted a sacrifice fly to left to bring Bologh home. Senior William Walsh (Maynard, MA) fought off an 0-2 pitch through the right side of the infield that plated Warriar to cut the deficit to 4-2.
- It would be as close as the Trailblazers could get because Salem added a pair of insurance runs on an RBI single by Connor Dolan and an RBI double by Gonzalez in the top of the seventh inning.
- The Vikings' Cam Fisher went the distance for the visitors, scattering seven hits over seven innings, allowing only two runs while striking out six and walking none to improve his record to 2-5. Senior Aidan Brett allowed two earned runs while striking out three but still fell to 3-7.
- Game #2
- In the second game, Salem opened the scoring in the first inning with five runs on seven hits. The big knocks were a two-run single by Owen Duggan and an RBI double by Nolan Currier.
- After the rough first inning, MCLA senior Nate Morse settled in an allowed only four more hits over the next four innings before allowing a leadoff double to Currier and then making way for sophomore reliever Collin Booth (Clarksburg, MA) with one out in the sixth inning. An RBI single by Angell would close the book on Morse and put Salem up 6-0.
- The Vikings' Alex Metznik (1-0) picked up his first win, allowing five hits over five innings and combining with relievers Brandon McMahon and Jake Simpson for a shutout. Morse took the loss for MCLA, falling to 3-7.
