Golf tabbed fifth in NAC preseason poll

Husson University has been selected as the top men's golf team in the 2017 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) preseason coaches' poll. The Eagles received a total of 80 points along with eight of the nine first place votes to lead the league.

Salem State University claimed second with 62 points, while Castleton University took third earning the remaining first-place vote for 57 total points and the University of Maine at Farmington earned fourth just one point behind the Spartans with 56 points. The fifth, sixth and seventh spots were just a few points apart, as Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts took fifth with 39 points, Maine Maritime Academy was sixth with 38 points and Johnson State College landed in seventh with 36 points. 

Rounding out the poll were the University of Maine at Presque Isle in eighth (23 points) and Green Mountain College in ninth (18 points).

Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league's head men's golf coaches.

Last season at the NAC Championship, Husson held a two-stroke advantage after the opening day of play and never looked back, claiming  the team's 11th NAC Title in 13 years with a two-day total of 584 at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course. The Eagles managed to record an impressive 289 in the opening round before posting a 295 on the final day to secure an automatic berth to the 2017 NCAA Championship. Salem State posted a 610 (291, 319) to take runner-up honors, while UMaine-Farmington followed with 616 (303, 313) for third and Castleton took fourth just two strokes behind the Beavers with a 618 (310, 308). 

Rounding out the 2016 field were Maine Maritime in fifth (641; 320, 321), Johnson State in sixth (647; 320, 327), MCLA in seventh (654; 337, 317), and Green Mountain in eighth (772; 391, 381). To view the final results from 2016, please click HERE.  

Five of the nine NAC men's golf teams will tee off today, as they prepare for the 2017 NAC Championship. MCLA will play host of the conference championship which will take place on Sunday, October 15, and Monday, October 16, at Berkshire Country Club.
