Golf competes at Williams Invitational, Day one recap

Williamstown, MA- A siren sounded from the pro shop at Taconic Golf Club just past 1:00 PM this afternoon to signal the start of the 2017 Williams College Invitational Tournament. The 6,808 yard par-71 course was in pristine condition for the 19 team field that placed 116 golfers around the grounds. A significant breeze made scoring during the first half of the afternoon difficult, and as such a few golfers and teams were able to separate themselves from the pack.

The Trinity College Bantams seized the lead on day one with a team score of 294 that featured three scores that either broke or threatened par. Junior Will Rosenfield, winner of this event in 2015, took a one shot lead on the individual leaderboard with a three-under 68 that helped place the Bantams in first.

Host Williams College will enter the second round just one stroke back of Trinity after shooting a score of 295 that was highlighted by sophomore Sam Goldenring's round of 69 that put him in solo second place behind Rosenfield.

The only other player in red figures after day one was swinging for the third place team. David McDaniel, a junior at Middlebury College, helped his team stay in the hunt at 299.

St. John Fisher and Western New England College rounded out the top five teams after the first round with scores of 304 and 305 respectively.

After the three players under par, the individual leaderboard is packed at the top. John Abbot of Western New England shot an even-par score of 71, and Taylor Kay-Green of Trinity and Jeffery Giguere of Middlebury each shot 72 to put them in a tie for fifth. After those six players there are 23 golfers separated by just three shots.

The leaderboard is bound to shift and change all throughout tomorrow's second round, which begins with another shotgun start at 9:00 AM. If today is any indication, the tournament will be decided by just a few shots, making every short putt and good opportunity extremely important for every team and every player.
