MCLA Softball sweeps Mass Maritime on the road; 14-0, 11-2

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.
--  Junior Amanda Meczywor (Adams, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in five runs to lead MCLA to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon by scores of 14-0 in the opener and 11-2 in the nightcap in five inning games played at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Trailblazers (10-14, 6-4 MASCAC) jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead in the opener before plating four runs each in the second, fourth and fifth frames, as both Meczywor and sophomore Shelbi Clary (Pittsfield, Mass.) drove in three runs in the contest.  Clary and fellow sophomore Samantha Boyle (Pittsfield, Mass.) each had two of MCLA's eight hits in the lid-lifter, as the visitors also received a pair of RBI off the bats of junior Marissa Mendetta (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and sophomore Jennifer Sicinski (Shelton, Vt.) in support of Meczywor, who scattered four hits and struck out five to earn her second victory of the season.  Sophomore Brittany Driscoll (Sutton, Mass.) rapped out a double in the opening game setback for the host Buccaneers (0-16, 0-10 MASCAC), who also received singles from senior Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) and freshmen Kristen O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) and Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.).  Sophomore Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) allowed just six earned runs and struck out five in suffering the setback inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime.

MCLA plated all of its nightcap runs in the opening inning of action, as the Trailblazers sent 17 batters to the plate in taking advantage of a pair of walks and five hit batsmen.  Junior Samantha Barbarotta (Pittsfield, Mass.) collected two hits and drove in three runs for the visitors, who also received two hits and a pair of RBI from Meczywor as well as two hits and an RBI each from Mendetta and sophomore Abigail Lucas (Braintree, Mass.) as part of a 13-hit attack.  Freshman Katelyn Henault (West Warwick, R.I.) came on to earn her first collegiate victory inside the circle for MCLA, as she struck out three over the first four innings of work.  The Buccaneers scored their two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Sherman and sophomore Ashley Michalski (Portsmouth, R.I.), as Driscoll rapped out two more hits in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime.  Swanson and junior Emilie Conway (Rehoboth, Mass.) added singles as well for the hosts, as Nice suffered the setback inside the circle.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at 3:30 p.m., while MCLA hosts Westfield State in a MASCAC twinbill on Wednesday afternoon in North Adams, Mass. beginning at 2:30 p.m
