Women's Hoop drops home game to Lancers 63-52
North Adams, MA- Worcester State University's Catherine Sweeney notched a triple double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists in lifting the visiting Lancers past MCLA 63-52 in MASCAC action this afternoon. The Lancers improve to 7-8 on the season and earn their first MASCAC win as they're now 1-2 in the conference. MCLA drops their seventh straight game and falls to 4-11 overall and is now 0-3 in the league.
Sweeney was outstanding throughout as she went 4-6 from the floor. She also collected 3 blocks and a steal for the Lancers.
Kaitlyn Berkel and Britt Herring were the beneficiaries of Sweeney's passing. Berkel netted a game high 14 points on 6-13 shooting while Herring scored 13 points and was 6-10 from the floor. Berkel finished off her own double double with 11 rebounds.
In the opening half of play, MCLA led 10-9 after Courtney Pingelski's bucket with 3:34 left in the first quarter. The visiting Lancers would hold MCLA scoreless over the next five minutes however as they used a 7-0 spurt to take the lead at 16-10. MCLA wouldn't regain the lead in the half as the Lancers opened up their largest lead at 27-18 on a Catherine Sweeney layup with 2:41 remaining. They would eventually lead 30-22 at the half holding the Trailblazers to just 32% shooting.
The Lancers never trailed over the final twenty minutes of action, but MCLA did make a run at them. After Worcester led 46-40 heading to the fourth quarter, Pingelski made two FT's to pull within four, but Herring answered on the next possession off another Sweeney assist to stem the tide. The Trailblazers would get within five points again at 56-51, but Emily Carens bucket gave the Lancers breathing room and they coasted home from there.
MCLA was led by Pingelski's 12 point night. She added 10 rebounds in the loss. Kylah Langston added 10 points for the Trailblazers. MCLA shot just 35% in the contest.
The Trailblazers are back at it Wednesday night when they head to Fitchburg State for another MASCAC tilt.
