Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball fell to the Trailblazers of MCLA, 74-56 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Wednesday evening at Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Knotted at 4-4, the Falcons took their first lead with a Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) hoop. MCLA evened up the game 10-all as junior Kylah Langston (North Attleboro, Mass.) connected from the elbow with 2:43 to play. The visitors closed out the frame with an 8-0 streak culminating with a basket from beyond the arc from Courtney Pingelski (Mechanicville, NY) holding an 18-11 advantage after one quarter.

Junior Emma Thomson (York, ME) drained a trey for the Falcons early in the second stanza to cut the deficit to 18-14. MCLA extended its lead 26-17 culminating with a three point play from Pingelski. A layup from junior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) closed out the half with MCLA holding a 33-26 margin.

Following intermission, the Green and Gold chipped away and trailed by two points (48-46) after Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass) drained a deep three ball. However, MCLA ended the frame with baskets from Langston and L'Rae Brundige (Valley Falls, NY) to hold a 52-46 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the visitors pushed their lead to double digits (61-51) with a jumper from Karina Mattera (Johnston, RI) midway through the stanza and extended the advantage (71-54) after a 10-0 run en route to the 74-56 final.

Inside the Numbers

·         Fitchburg State shot 20-for-64 (31.3%) from the field and 26.9% (7-for-26) from three point range.

·         MCLA went 29-for-73 (39.7%) overall, including (5-of-13) 438.5% from beyond the arc.

·         The Falcons were led by Marazzi with a team-best 19 points and five rebounds, whileCatherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.) added 7 points and a game-high 14 boards. Holmes added 10 points off the bench.

·         For the Trailblazers, Pingelski posted a game-leading 31 points and ten caroms, while Langston chipped in with 17 points, and nine rebounds for the visitors.

Falcons will travel to Worcester State on Saturday afternoon to take on the Lancers in a crucial MASCAC bout starting at 3:00pm. MCLA will host Curry on Monday night.
