Caney scores four goals, but Trailblazer lacrosse drops nail biter to SVC 12-11 in non conference action

Bennington, VT- Lauren Nesshoever and Mel Orrell combined for 11 goals in leading the Southern Vermont Lacrosse program to a tight 12-11 win over the MCLA Trailblazers this afternoon in non conference action.  With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 5-2 while MCLA is now 3-5 on the season.

The teams played close throughout the contest as neither side led by more than three goals.  SVC increased a 6-5 halftime lead to 9-6 with 23:52 remaining in the contest.  The Trailblazers would rally and eventually tie the game at 10-10 on Natalie Caney's third goal of the game with 13:42 left to play.

SVC's Orrell and Nesshoever put the Mountaineers on top 12-10 with 7:44 left to play, but when Caney connected on her fourth goal with 3:53 left to play, it was 12-11.  The Trailblazers couldn't muster up the tying goal as SVC cleared the ball in the final minute to preserve the victory.

Nesshoever ended with 6 goals on just 9 shot attempts to lead SVC.  Orrell finished with 5 goals, 6 ground balls, and 4 draw controls.  Kristina Goldup earned the win in net stopping 11 shots in her fifth win of the season.

For the Trailblazers, they were paced by Caney's four goals, two assists, and 11 ground balls.  She added 6 draw controls for MCLA.  Mackenzie Cutler had three goals for the Trailblazers.  Zoe Elwell was credited with the loss in goal playing the first half and stopping 6 shots.  Julia Coughlin played the second half and collected five saves.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Salem State for a MASCAC matchup.
