Tennis rallies past Johnson State 5-4 in NAC action

Johnson, VT- The MCLA women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to earn a hard fought 5-4 win over the Johnson State Badgers and in the process move to 3-1 in NAC play.  The Trailblazers are now 5-3 on the season while JSC drops to 6-2 on the season.

The Trailblazers seemed in control after taking a pair of hard fought doubles matches.  Mariza Sfakianaki paired with Brian Higgins to earn a point via an 8-6 win in the top doubles slot.  Sarah Hachadourian teamed with Anna Despart to earn another point by an identical 8-6 margin while JSC took the third doubles point.  MCLA would hold a slim 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches.

JSC quickly took the lead when Grace Page, Kali Covell, and Nicole Monick earned wins out of the 2nd, 4th, and 5th singles matches.  MCLA would rally however, as Samantha Gawron got MCLA a point via a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win in the third singles match making it 4-3 in favor of JSC with two matches still playing.

Sfakianaki outlasted Katerina Van Woerkom 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to square the match out of the top singles slot.  From there, the match camed down to the sixth singles match pitting MCLA's Hachadourian with JSC's Jordan Miller.

Hachadourian claimed the first set 6-3 but dropped the second 7-6 (6-5) to set up a winner take all third.  Hachadourian buckled down and earned the match point via a 6-3 third set win giving the Trailblazers a come from behind win.

MCLA will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday when they travel up to Colby Sawyer for a 3:30pm match.
