GROTON, Conn. -- Golfers faced windy and chilly conditions on Sunday afternoon, as the opening round of the MASCAC Men's Golf Championship was played at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Connecticut.

Salem State University sits atop the leaderboard after the first day of completion, shooting a 309 as a team. That score is good for a six-stroke lead over Springfield College, which is in second place with a 315. Westfield State sits in third with a 323, followed by New England College (332), Eastern Nazarene (347), Mitchell College (347), Worcester State (349), and MCLA (403).

Leading the pack is Brian Cannata of Salem State, who battled the weather and shot a one-over-par 72. The senior is one of three Vikings to sit inside the top 10 after Sunday, joined by Danny DiLisio and Ryan O'Leary, who are among three golfers tied for fifth, and Ethan Doyle, who is one of four players standing in 10th place.

Trailing Cannata is Brandon Smith of Westfield State, who fired a four-over-par 75, and Springield College senior Nick Demaio rounds out the top three, closing the day with a five-over-par score of 76.

MCLA junior Paul Roeder (Pittsfield, MA) birdied the par 5 18th and finished the day tied for 16th shooting an 84.

The second and final round begins tomorrow, October 3rd at 9am.
