Beverly, Mass.—Freshman golfer Matt Gover earned the individual championship at the MASCAC Championships this weekend, while the Trailblazers team finished second to Springfield College.

EVENT RESULTS:

  • Winning Team: Springfield College (Day 1: 302, Day 2: 321, Total: +33)
  • Winning Individuals: Mat Gover (Day 1: 71 (-1), day 2: 76 (+4), Total +3)

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gover shot the tournament's lowest round on Saturday, carding a one under-par 71. His day two round was only one shot off the pace of Worcester State's Jon Gastonguay's 75, shooting a four over par 76.
  • Alex Ferris notched a top-ten finish, tying for ninth place at +18, carding an 83 on Saturday and a 79 on Sunday. Ferris' +7 on Sunday made him one of the bigger movers from round one to round two, improving his place in the standings by four places.
  • Gover was named to the All MASCAC First Team with Salem State's Ethan Doyle and a trio of Springfield College golfers in David Girourd, Nick DeMaio, and Amir Ardolino.
  • Ferris was named to the All MASCAC Second Team along with Salem State's Danny DiLisio, Henry Stonehouse, Worcester States Gastonguay, and Springfield College's Justin Acquarulo.

TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Trailblazers were the most consistent team, shooting a +32 on Saturday and then following it up with a +36 on Sunday for a team score of +68 to earn a second-place finish.
  • Coming into the final round, the Trailblazers sat in third place, trailing the defending champion Salem State by seven strokes for second place. Their combined +36 on Sunday was eight strokes better than the Vikings, making them the only team to improve its position in the standings between day one and day two.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Gover led all players with 23 pars during the tournament and tied for third with five birdies. Gover also excelled at the par 4's, where he finished as a plus one, finishing the holes with an average of 4.05 strokes.
  • Ferris came in tied for third place in par 3's, finishing the holes as a +2 and averaging 3.25 shots on par 3's. Just behind Ferris was Cody White, who tied for fifth place and a +3, averaging 3.38 shots on par 3's.
