Men’s Soccer drops 1-0 nonconference decision to Husson

Bangor, ME- The MCLA Men's Soccer team dropped a 1-0 nonconference decision to Husson University this afternoon at Boucher Field. With the win the Eagles improve to 7-2-2 while the Trailblazers fall to 4-6-1.

With MCLA making the nearly six-hour drive north and Husson having just played yesterday, the two teams produced a very-well played first half. Though the Eagles certainly carried most of the play outshooting the visitors 6-1, the Trailblazer defense prevented senior goalkeeper Sam Edge (Williamstown, MA) from having to make a single save. The Eagles two best threats of the half didn't even end with a shot being attempted.

Husson would keep up the pressure coming out of halftime and in the 55th minute first year Eagle Pablo Maroto (Las Rozas, Madrid) would test Edge as he ran down a well-placed through-ball and broke in from the left side. The senior keeper was up to the task coming out to cut down Maroto's angle to make the save.

Unfortunately for the Trailblazers Maroto would get his revenge in the 70th minute.  Husson sophomore Arni Hreidarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland) would get the play started as he dribbled a ball from the right sideline towards the middle just above the box. With the MCLA focused on Hreidarsson he would slip a pass forward and across the grain to senior Jarod Bolton (Belchertown, MA) who would perfectly place a cross to a streaking Maroto who put a header behind Edge to give Husson a 1-0 advantage.

In the 75th minute MCLA would have their best opportunity of the day to score and even the match when first year Jacob Richardson (Adams, MA) sent in a ball from just over the midline. The ball would just sail over an Eagle defender's head and be collected by classmate Justice Daniels (Pittsfield, MA) who from a tough angle at the corner of the 6-yard box, would have his attempt blocked.

Neither team would register another shot and the Maroto header would stand as the game-winner.

Husson held a decisive advantage in both shots (13-3) and corners (6-1).

Eagle senior goalkeeper Benjamin Powell (Frankfort, ME) saw no shots on net yet earned the win and improves to 2-2-1 on the season. MCLA keeper Sam Edge made 1 save and took the loss falling to 3-5-1.

Husson will next host Bowdoin College on Wednesday at 7:30pm for a nonconference match. MCLA returns to conference play on Friday at 6pm when it hosts Framingham State at Shewcraft Field.
