Softball plays well on final day but drops pair of contests to St. Scholastica/Augsburg
Leesburg, FL-- The MCLA softball team saved their best play for the final day, however the Trailblazers dropped a pair of contests this afternoon. The Trailblazers held the lead for most of the game in the opener to St. Scholastica, however the Saints scored 12 runs over the final two innings to pull away for a 13-3 win. In the nightcap, MCLA's Sarah Williams threw well, but the Trailblazers had trouble stringing hits together as Augsburg defeated them 3-1.
MCLA ends the southern swing at 0-9.
Game One: St. Scholastica 13, MCLA 3
After giving up one run in the top of the first, MCLA tied things up in the bottom of the inning. After Maddie Teta singled to lead off the contest, she would come home when Sydney Mathews was thrown out stealing.
MCLA would take the lead in the second when Avianna Ibrahim launched a double to right that brought home Nicole Main for a 2-1 lead. A few batters later, Lidia Flores would bring around Ibrahim to increase the lead to 3-1.
Trailblazer starter Lora Woyton was cruising as she held the Saints at bay thru five innings of action. She ran into some trouble in the sixth as the Saints scored three times to take a 4-3 lead. Woyton came out to start the seventh, but the Saints parlayed some timely hitting and a couple MCLA miscues to score nine times and put the game away.
Main led the offense with a pair of hits and every Trailblazer collected at least one hit in the contest.
Game Two: Augsburg 3, MCLA 1
In the nightcap, MCLA's Sarah Williams and Augsburg's Brynn Hostettler hooked up in a pitchers duel. Both starting pitchers went the distance as hits were hard to come by.
Augsburg would grab an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the first against Williams. She would settle down however and leave two runners stranded. Augsburg would tally two more runs in the third to increase the lead to 3-0 thru three frames.
MCLA could not solve Hostettler as the right hander took a no hitter into the fifth inning. The Trailblazers could not scratch a run across until the seventh inning however. Lora Woyton smacked a run scoring double to center field scoring Madyson Torres to cut the margin to 3-1. Hostettler would settle down however and collect a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Hostettler ended allowing just two hits while striking out 13 Trailblazers.
Williams had her best outing of the trip as she went all seven innings, allowed 7 hits and struck out 4.
MCLA is off until next weekend when they head to Albertus Magnus.
