Softball begins MASCAC play with pair of losses to Bears

Bridgewater, MA-- The MCLA Softball team dropped a pair of contests this afternoon at Bridgewater State.  The games marked the MASCAC openers for both teams.  The Bears took game one 16-3 before winning game two 11-3.  

MCLA is now 2-13 overall and 0-2 in the MASCAC.  Bridgewater State begins conference play at 2-0 and is also 9-10-1 overall.

Game One: Bridgewater St. 16, MCLA 3

After one inning of play, the Bears held a 3-2 lead over the Trailblazers.  In the top of the second inning however, the Bears would erupt for 12 runs to take a 15-2 advantage.  The game would settle down over the middle innings before each team scored a run in the fifth.  The game was called due to the mercy rule after five innings.

MCLA collected seven hits in the contest as Madyson Torres led the team with a 3-3 showing.  She added an RBI as well.  Lidia Flores and Justina Pardi each ended with a pair of hits for the Trailblazers.

Lora Woyton (0-4) took the loss on the mound for the Trailblazers.  

Bridgewater pounded out 19 hits in the win.  Emma Healy and Megan Sharon each went 4-5 for the Bears.  Sharon drove in 5 runs and scored three times.  Healy added 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.

The run support was plenty for Madelyn Klingel.  She went the distance and allowed the 7 hits and 3 runs to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Game Two: Bridgewater St. 11, MCLA 3

Game two followed a similar script to its predecessor.  The teams were tied up at 2-2 after one inning of play.  The Bears squeezed out a run in the second to take a 3-2 lead before scoring four more times in the third inning to take control.

MCLA would get one back in the bottom half, but the Bears scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings to earn the run rule win.

The Bears would outhit MCLA 15-7 in the nightcap as Alexandra Ruprecht led the offense with a 3-4 showing with two runs batted in.  Four other Bears added two hits in the win.

Bridgewater's McKayla Cusack went the distance going 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, and striking out 5 Trailblazers.

MCLA was led on offense by Lora Woyton.  The first year belted her first home run of the season and she ended the game with a pair of hits.  Flores continued her solid offensive afternoon with two more hits in the nightcap.

Avianna Ibrahim went the distance off the mound for MCLA.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Skidmore.
