Softball falls to Worcester State in MASCAC action

Worcester, MA—The Worcester State Softball team took a pair of MASCAC games from the MCLA Trailblazers this afternoon at Rockwood Park.  The Lancers improve to 11-11 overall and are now 4-0 I the league.  MCLA dips to 2-17 and are 0-4 in the conference.

Game One: Worcester State 8, MCLA 0 (six innings)

The Trailblazers couldn't get any offense going in the opener as they tallied just three hits off Lancer hurler Emily Bartlett.  Bartlett went all six innings allowing just three hits and striking out 13 Trailblazers.  She is now 5-5 on the season.

Worcester scored twice in the second inning off MCLA starter Lora Woyton.  Naraylee Baez had the key hit in the frame to put Worcester ahead 2-0.  The Lancers would plate five runs in the fourth inning to take command.  Bartlett helped her own cause with a two run single to highlight the inning as the Lancers led 7-0.

Worcester would tally a run in the sixth to earn the run rule victory on an RBI groundout.

Woyton went 5.1 innings and struck out three in the game.

Game Two: Worcester State 3, MCLA 1

The Lancers posted a three run second inning to jump ahead early against MCLA starter Avianna Ibrahim.  Emma Lanpher ripped a two run double to left center field for an early 2-0 lead.  Bartlett would reach on an error than brought Lanpher around to score and it was 3-0 in favor of Worcester.

Both pitching staffs held form from there as Worcester's Jen Thorburn and the MCLA's Lidia Flores kept both offenses in check.   Flores relieved Ibrahim after the second inning and posted four scoreless frames. 

MCLA couldn't push a run across thru six innings but loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh.  Worcester's Sarah Gosselin came on to pitch to MCLA's Justina Pardi. She promptly hit Pardi with a pitch to bring home a run and move the tying runs into scoring postion.  Gosselin would bear down however and strikeout Madyson Torres to earn the save.

The Trailblazer offense had nine hits but left eleven on base as they could not come up with the key hit.  Maddie Teta, Ibrahim, and Justina Pardi each had two hits to pace the MCLA offense.

Thorburn went 6.2 innings for the Lancers.  She struck out six Trailblazers in earning the win.

MCLA is back in action on Wednesday when they head to Sage for a non league twinbill.
