Softball picks up pair of conference W's with sweep of Bucs

Buzzards Bay, MA-- MCLA's Lora Woyton tossed a shutout in game one and the Trailblazer offense pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap as the softball team picked up a pair of wins over Mass. Maritime.  MCLA took game one 9-0 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 12-8 win in game two.

MCLA is now 5-24 on the season and 2-8 in league play.  The Bucs fall to 7-23 overall and 0-10 in the MASCAC.

Game One: MCLA 9, MMA 0

Woyton was the story in this one as she tossed all five innings and allowed just three hits.  She struck out six Bucs on her way to the mercy rule victory.

MCLA would get all the support they'd need in the first inning.  Justina Pardi started the scoring with an RBI single that brought around Lidia Flores for an early 1-0 lead.  Flores would add a two run single in the second to increase the margin to 3-0.  

Avianna Ibrahim added another run when she scored on a wild pitch in the third.  In the fourth inning, MCLA's Ezmeralda Albright ripped a solo home run, her first as a Trailblazer, to make it 5-0.  The Trailblazers would tack on two more runs as Maddie Teta and Flores each delivered RBI's.  Flores ended a solid offensive day with two more RBI's in the fifth to close out the scoring.

Flores was 3-4 with a season best 5 RBI's in the win.  Teta and Pardi each ended with two hits apieces.

Game Two: MCLA 12, MMA 8

The MCLA offense showed out in game two.  The top of the MCLA lineup accounted for 13 of the teams 18 hits on the afternoon.  Flores continued her torrid hitting going 3-5 in the nightcap with another 5 RBI performance.  Pardi and Ibrahim each had three hits while Teta and Woyton ended with two.

Woyton and Albright added RBI's early and when Flores drove home Teta in the third, MCLA led 3-0.  Ibrahim added another run on a groundout to increase it to 4-0 before MMA rallied.  They would get a run back in the third, but MCLA's Flores answered with a two run single to make it 6-1 after three and a third innings.  

The Bucs would add three tallies in the home fourth to make a game of it as they inched within 6-4.  The teams traded runs in the fifth and then MCLA blew things open with two in the sixth and three in the seventh to hold off the Bucs.

Sarah Williams started off the mound for MCLA and went the first four innings.  She allowed five hits and fine earned runs.  Ibrahim came on in relief and tossed the final three innings to secure the win. She struck out six Buccaneer batters.

MCLA is back at home on Monday when they host Westfield State.
