Softball falls in midweek twinbill to Owls

North Adams, MA-- Westfield State's Stephanie Scovilled earned the wins in both games in helping lead the Owls to a doubleheader sweep over the MCLA Trailblazers this afternoon at the Zavattaro Complex.  The Owls took game one 9-2 behind Scoville's complete game performance.  Westfield would take the nightcap 12-6 as Scoville came out of the Owl bullpen to snatch her second win of the day.

The Owls improve to .500 at 16-16 on the season but more importantly are now 9-3 in the MASCAC.  MCLA falls to 5-26 overall and is 2-10 in the league.

Game One: Westfield 9, MCLA 2

Scoville tossed all seven innings and allowed just five hits and two earned runs.  She struck out three Trailblazers as she improved her record to 7-6 in the opener.

Westfield started quickly against Trailblazer starter Lora Woyton as Jordan Lummus singled home Lindsay Cordopatri in the first for a quick 1-0 lead.  The Owls would tack on two more in the second on another Lummus RBI hit while another came across on a throwing miscue.  Scoville would help herself with a solo home run to right as the Owls increased the lead to 4-0 after two and a half innings.

MCLA got to Scoville for their two runs in the third.  Maddie Teta singled and the Owl outfield committed an error allowing Nicole Main to score and it was 4-1.  Lidia Flores would drive home Teta to make it a 4-2 game after three innings.

From there, it was all Westfield and Scoville.  The Owls added three runs in the fourth highlighted by Colleen Hughes' two run single.  Westfield would add two more insurance tallies in the seventh inning as Megan Metzger drove in two to provide the final margin.

Westfield outhit MCLA 12-5 in the contest as Christina Ciampa led all players with three hits.  Metzger, Cordopatri, and Lummus all ended with two hits apiece.

MCLA was led by Teta and Woyton as they both ended with two hits.  Woyton took the loss going all seven innings.

Game Two: Westfield 12, MCLA 6

In the nightcap, both teams came out swinging.  The Owls led 4-1 after two innings of play but MCLA would score five times in the third inning to take the lead at 5-4 off Owl starter Katherine Canty.

Woyton started the rally with an RBI single to left and Ezmeralda Albright drove in another when she reached on an error.  The error allowed another run to come across and finally when Sarah McMahon grounded out to bring home Woyton, MCLA led 6-4.

The lead was short lived as Westfield scored three runs in the fourth as Hughes drove in one with a single and the Owls converted a first and third play to retake the lead at 7-6.

They would add to the total with two more runs in the fifth on RBI knocks from Lummus and Cordopatri to increase the margin to 9-6.  Westfield put the game out of reach with a three run seventh.

The Owl offense had 14 hits off three different MCLA hurlers.  Lexus Mastomatteo led all players going 4-5 with 5 RBI's on the afternoon.  Hughes and Cordopatri each ended with three hits.  Scoville came out of the bullpen to toss four scoreless innings to earn her second win of the day.
