LONGMEADOW, Mass. – The MCLA Softball team returned to the field for their first games since their spring break Florida trip with a doubleheader against Bay Path University. Sarah Williams picked up a win in the first game and then came on in relief to close out the second game.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game #1
    • Bay Path opened the scoring by putting up two runs in the top of the second inning, but MCLA responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Lora Woyton kicked the inning off with a double into center field and moved to third when Maggie Closinski followed up with a double to center of her own. Both Woyton and Closinski then scored on a double to left by Kristie Zator
    • In the bottom of the third, Ella Staffier started the inning with a triple to right field and then scored when Hailey Peabody reached on an error by the second baseman. Woyton followed Peabody with a single to center and then moved to second when the Wildcats attempted to throw Peabody out at third. Closinski then brough Peabody home with a line drive single to left.
    • Sarah Williams went the distance in the first game, scattering seven hits while striking out three while improving her record to 3-4. Madison Sunderland also went the distance for Bay Path but was saddled with her fourth loss, dropping to 3-4.
  • Game #2
    • The Trailblazers scored early and often in the second game of the doubleheader, starting with four runs in the first inning and capping their scoring with another four spot in the fifth, sandwiching three innings with a single run each.
    • In the second game, Madyson Torres had three hits and a pair of RBI.
    • Peabody stayed hot at the plate, knocking in two runs and scoring two more with a two-for-four showing at the plate.
    • Staffier scored three runs and drove in another while being one of four MCLA players with a multi-hit game.
    • Justina Pardi had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
    • Maddy Teta rounded out the quartet of Trailblazers with multi-hit games while driving in two runs and stealing a pair of bases.
    • Woyton went the first five innings for MCLA to pick up her first win of the year, advancing her record to 1-3. Williams got her first save of the season when she came on with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh inning and induced a fly ball to Hannah Mitchem in left field. Mitchem then doubled up a Wildcats runner who failed to return to second on the flyball.

UP NEXT:

On Saturday, MCLA will be back in action when they travel to Worcester State for a MASCAC matchup with the Lancers at Ralph Raymond Diamond at Rockwood Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
