Burke nets career high 26 points in loss to Wentworth

North Adams, MA- Wentworth's Maddy Foster scored 30 points and pulled down 9 boards to lead the Leopards past the MCLA Trailblazers 60-48 this evening in non conference women's basketball action.  Wentworth earns their first win of the season as they now stand at 1-4.  MCLA is still winless at 0-7.

Foster went 13-19 from the floor and added a pair of steals in the win.  Teammate Abriana Busbey added 10 points and a game best 13 rebounds for Wentworth.

After one quarter the game was tied at 10-10.  The teams combined to shoot just 7-31 in the opening quarter of play.

Wentworth would outscore MCLA 8-0 to start the second quarter to take an 18-10 lead.  The lead would grow to eleven points at halftime.  Brooke Carlson's layup in the final minute made it 28-17 at the half.  Wentworth pounded the ball inside in the quarter and shot 62% (8-13) in the decisive quarter.  Foster would collect 18 of the Leopards 28 points in the opening half of play.

Out of the locker room the Leopards quickly extended the margin to 15 points at 32-17 but MCLA wouldn't go quietly.  The Trailblazers used an 11-2 run fueled by Shannon Carney and Emily Burke to pull within six at 34-28 midway through the third quarter.  Another Carney jumper just two minutes later got the hosts within five at 37-32 but Wentworth's Gabby Amoddio stemmed the tide with a bucket.  Eventually Wentworth would take a 43-35 into the final period.

Wentworth would open the quarter on a 7-0 spurt to take a commanding 50-35 edge and would extend to their largest margin of the night at 56-38.  MCLA would get no closer than 10 as the Leopards cruised home to their first victory.

Burke was outstanding for MCLA collecting a career best 26 points.  She was 10-19 shooting and that included a 6-12 performance from three point land.  Carney added 9 points while tossing in 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.  

MCLA shot 35% from the floor while the Leopards converted at 48% after the rough start.

Next up for MCLA is a home date with Mount Holyoke on Saturday at noon.  Wentworth hosts Roger Williams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener on Wednesday night.
