Women's Basketball drops low scoring affair to Mount Holyoke 46-35

North Adams, MA-- The MCLA Women's basketball team ran out of gas down the stretch as the visiting Mount Holyoke Lyons pulled away late for a 46-35 win over the Trailblazers in non-league action.  The Lyons even their mark at 2-2 while MCLA is still in search of their first win at 0-8.

MCLA led 12-6 after one quarter of play but Mount Holyoke stormed back in the second quarter to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.  The Lyons held MCLA to just 1-14 shooting in the second quarter to pull on top.

The Trailblazers outscored MHC 14-10 in the third to close within three at 31-28 heading into the fourth.

In the closing period, MCLA's Hannah Mazzeo converted a bucket to draw within one at 31-30, but Mount Holyoke responded with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to sprint out to a 38-30 lead.  

The Trailblazers stemmed the run with a Shannon Carney layup, but MHC's Annika Brooks answered to keep MCLA at bay.  Another Brooks layup extended the margin to double digits and the Lyons were not threatened over the final two minutes.

Brooks ended with a game high 17 point afternoon.  She finished off the double double with 11 boards.  Mikayla McEwen added 6 points but grabbed 14 rebounds.  MHC owned a 50-36 edge off the glass and overcame 23 turnovers in the win.

For MCLA, Emily Burke had a team best 12 point effort.  Mazzeo filled the stat sheet with 9 points and a season best 19 rebounds.

The Trailblazers could not overcome 18 turnovers and a 23% shooting night.

MCLA will play again on Thursday when they host St. Joseph (CT) at 7pm.
