NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The MCLA Women's Basketball team continued their run conference play this evening when they welcomed Westfield State for a MASCAC matchup at the Amsler Campus Center Gymnasium. The Trailblazers' Hailey Peabody led all players with 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, but a trio of Owls finished with double-digit points, and Westfield came away with an 88 to 42 win.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Wednesday, January 31, 2024
  • Score: Westfield State 88, MCLA 42
  • Records: Westfield State Owls 12-9 (MASCAC 5-3) | MCLA Trailblazers 4-17 (MASCAC 1-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With only eight healthy players, the Trailblazers were just outgunned by a Westfield team that had 12 of their 14 players finish with at least 10 minutes of playing time.
  • MCLA held the lead as late as the 4:13 mark of the first quarter when Hailey Peabody made a cutting layup with an assist from Kaylee Gray to go up 12-11. However, the Owls finished the quarter on a 10-3 run and led after one 21-15.
  • Westfield utilized a Grinnell College style of play in which the Owls would change out their entire lineup of players for five fresh players and utilized a full-court press on defense, which left the understaffed Trailblazers at a massive disadvantage. The Owls began to pull further and further away from the hosts to take a 48-29 lead to halftime and never looked back.
  • MCLA's Hailey Peabody led all players with 21 points and pulled down 16 boards for her fourth double-double of the season, including two in the last two games.
  • Zaylee Ramos added 10 points for the Trailblazers, crossing the double-digit barrier for the third game in a row.
  • For Westfield, 11 of the 14 players scored at least two points and were led by 17 points apiece from Hannah Sheldon and Jordan Grant. Olivia Hadla tagged on 14 points for good measure.
