Volleyball earns split with hard fought 3-2 win over Utica

North Adams, MA-- The MCLA Volleyball team pulled out a five set thriller 3-2 against Utica in the nightcap of today's tri-match in the Amsler Campus Center Gym.  The Trailblazers dropped the opening game to Norwich University 3-0.  Each team got a win on the day however as Utica defeated the Cadets 3-2 in the neutral game.

MCLA is now 2-1 on the season.  Utica is 1-5 overall while Norwich is 4-1.

MCLA vs. Utica

MCLA cruised in the opening set against the Pioneers earning a 25-14 set win.  Utica would storm back after trailing 17-10 in the second set to earn a 27-25 win to even things up at 1-1. MCLA eeked out a 26-24 win in the third before the visitors set up a fifth set with a 25-14 win.

In the deciding set, Utica jumped ahead early before MCLA's Kelly Moczulski asserted herself.  She began a run with a kill and then held serve to eventually give MCLA the lead.  The hosts would never relinquish the lead again and when Chloie Garber converted the final point it gave MCLA the hard fought 3-2 win.

Garber ended with a match best 20 kills.  She added 8 digs.  Moczulski ended with 16 kills and 14 digs in the win.  Kelsey LaFreniere had a nice game ending with 10 kills.  Natasha Stewart set another career high with 52 assists in the win.  She also ended with 12 digs and a pair of aces.  Ellie Walter-Goodspeed filled the stat sheet with 26 digs on defense.

MCLA vs. Norwich

The Cadets came out strong in the opening game of the Tri-Match.  They would defeat MCLA by set scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-17 to earn the win.  The duo of Kathryn Farnum and Addison Hall were difficult for MCLA to handle as they combined for 25 kills in the win.

MCLA was paced Garber's team best 13 kills while Reagan Scattergood ended with 12.  Stewart once again fed the offense to the tune of 31 assists.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Tuesday night when they open up MASCAC play against Framingham State at 7pm at home.
