North Adams, MA- On Monday, September 21, 2015, MCLA Athletics will host the 19th annual Golf Classic at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This year, MCLA is pleased to honor retired Men’s Soccer Coach Ron Shewcraft for his commitment and dedication to the Athletic programs’ at MCLA, along with the men’s and women’s soccer programs.  Petri Contracting will once again serve as the President's Club title sponsor of the event.

Shewcraft has a storied history at MCLA.  He was the head men’s soccer coach from 1978-2006, compiling an overall mark of 292-184-46 (.604 winning percentage).  His program made 16 postseason appearances and included five MASCAC championships, one New England Championship, and the only Final Four appearance in school history.  Shewcraft coached six players who played professionally, mentored two All-American’s, and 25 All-Region players.  In 2007, MCLA officially named the turf field in honor of Shewcraft for his outstanding legacy.  Currently, Shewcraft Field is home to Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Lacrosse, and used a practice facility for Baseball and Softball.

Since retiring from coaching, Shewcraft has continued as the chair of Physical Education department and has helped spearhead the Shewcraft Field Lights Initiative.  The two year campaign for lights ends in December and all proceeds from the 2015 Golf Classic will go towards that initiative.  With the addition of lights, there will be more opportunities for student use such as intramural activities and events, student gatherings and functions, and many others. The lights will also extend practice and playing times for all sport and intramural offerings as well as offer potential recruiting opportunities for all programs.

The tournament is an 18-hole scramble format.  Entry into the tournament includes golf, cart, gift, lunch, and buffet dinner. Tournament contests include hole-in-one prize holes and closest to the pin and longest drive competitions. A raffle and silent auction are held throughout the day. There are both gross and net division winners at the conclusion of the event.

In the last eighteen years, the Golf Classic has brought together community businesses, alumni, and friends from all over Berkshire County in support of MCLA’s student athletes. Last year’s event raised over $20,000 for the Athletics department.  There are many ways to get involved in the Golf Classic.  Interested parties can register to play as an individual or grab a foursome.  Other ways to get involved include various sponsorship opportunities or the donation of a raffle prize.  Links to register are below:
