Baseball swept by Springfield in nonconference action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— The MCLA Baseball team dropped a pair of two-run nonconference decisions this afternoon at Archie Allen Field to Springfield College. The Trailblazers fell in game one 6-4 and lost game two 8-6.With the sweep Springfield improves to 6-7-1 while MCLA falls to 6-7.

A Noel Medina single drove in Austin Rachiele (1-for-3, RBI) and Ty Mazzeo's fielder's choice brought home Medina and ultimately Clarence Givhans (1-for-3) in the top of the 1st to give MCLA the early lead. Springfield would get one back in the home half to make in 3-1 after one.

Michael Wormuth would score on a Springfield throwing error in the top of the 2nd to put the Trailblazers up 4-1 but the Pride would score one in the bottom half and two more in both the 3rd and 4th innings to go ahead 6-4 after four.

MCLA would put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the 7th, but Springfield reliever Jack DeGirolamo (S, 1) would end the game with a clutch strikeout to earn his first save of the season.

Pride starting pitcher Blake Roberge (W, 2-0) allowed 3 earned runs on four hits striking out four batters in 5 innings pitched to earn the win. MCLA starter Bryan Rosario (L, 3-2) endured the loss allowing 6 earned runs on ten hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

Game Two         Springfield 8      MCLA 6

A Michael Lepere RBI single would give Springfield a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st in game two but a Rob Correia (2-for-4, RBI) single to right scoring Medina (2-for-4) would tie things up 1-1 headed to the bottom of the 2nd.

The Pride would break the tie again scoring three runs in the bottom of the 2nd and two more in the bottom of the 3rd to jump ahead 6-1.

MCLA would respond in the top of the 4th as a Rachiele (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) bases loaded triple would cut deficit to 6-4 but the hosts would add runs in each of the next two innings to make it 8-4 after five.

The Trailblazers would rally late with a leadoff triple in the 7th by Givhans (2-for-4) followed by a Randy Adams (1-for3, RBI) double and Medina single cutting the lead to 8-6 with no outs. But as he had done is game one, Jack DeGirolamo (S, 2) would enter the game with the go ahead run at the plate and end the game with a strikeout.

The Pride used six pitchers in the contest with starter Connor Caverly (W ,2-1) earning the win allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out four. Jaden Palumbo started on the mound for MCLA but Aidan Brett (L, 0-2) took the loss for the Trailblazers.

Springfield will next host Brandeis Tuesday at 3:30pm. MCLA will return to Springfield College on Friday to host Bridgewater State as they begin MASCAC play next weekend with a three-game series against the Bears. The two teams will travel to Bridgewater on Saturday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12pm.
