Baseball falls to Bridgewater State in MASCAC season opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Bridgewater State starting pitcher Matthew Seavey pitched seven strong innings allowing just two hits and one run leading the Bears to an 11-3 MASCAC opening day win over MCLA today at Archie Allen Field on the campus of Springfield College.  With the win Bridgewater State moves to 10-5 (1-0 MASCAC) while MCLA falls to 6-8 (0-1 MASCAC).

The Bears would spot Seavey a 3-run lead in the 1st inning and stretch that out to 8-0 after three-and a-half. A William Walsh base hit in the bottom of the 4th would bring home Ty Mazzeo to put the Trailblazers on the board.

Bridgewater would tack on three more in the top of the 7th to make it 11-1. In the bottom of the 9th MCLA's Noel Medina (2-for-4, RBI) would double to bring in Justin Hernandez and later score on a Mazzeo ground out but that would be all the Trailblazers could muster dropping game one of the weekend series, 11-3.

Five Bridgewater State players had multi-hit games including Scott Emerson (3-for-5, 2RBIs) and Kevin Lindsay (2-for-5, 3RBIs).

Seavey (W, 1-1) did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 5th inning and only walked two batters in seven innings pitched for the Bears. MCLA sent five pitchers to the mound but starter Nate Morse (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Trailblazers allowing 6 earned runs on ten hits in four innings pitched. Morse and Aidan Brett each registered three strikeouts.

The three-game series will resume on Sunday at Bridgewater with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
