Baseball swept by Worcester State in MASCAC doubleheader

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—After taking the first game of the weekend series against Worcester State yesterday the MCLA Baseball team was swept in a doubleheader today by the Lancers at Joe Wolfe Stadium. The visitors took the opener handily by a score of 14-1 then came from behind late in the nightcap to win 4-2. Worcester State improved to 8-12 (4-2 MASCAC) while MCLA dropped to 7-13 (1-5 MASCAC).

After Joe Auger led off the top of the 3rd with a solo homerun, an Anthony Iamarone two-run double and a Chris Ausiello RBI single would give the Lancers a 4-0 lead.

MCLA's Austin Rachiele would answer in the home-half with a solo shot of his own to make it 4-1 but that would be the last run the Trailblazers would score in the opener.

Worcester would plate four runs in the 6th and six more in the 7th to salt away game one, 14-1.

Cole Glassburn (W, 2-1) would go the distance allowing only one run on five hits for the Lancers. MCLA starting pitcher Bryan Rosario (L, 3-4) allowed 6 runs on seven hits, striking out six batters in the loss.

MCLA's Clarence Givhans would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 1st but Worcester State would tie the game in the top of the 3rd on a Tyler Smith RBI double that brough in Joe Auger.

That score would hold until the bottom of the 6th when Jayco Pena singled in Randy Adams to give the Trailblazers a 2-1 lead headed to the final inning. But the Lancers would respond with three runs on RBI hits by Tom Halliwell, Alex Sorenti and Anthony Iamarone to go up 4-2.

MCLA would get the go ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the 7th but Lancer reliever Danny DiMassimo (S, 1) registered the final two outs to preserve the win.

Worcester State staring pitcher Kevin Zarnoch Jr. (W, 2-3) claim the victory allowing 2 runs on four hits, striking out six batters in 6.1 innings of work. MCLA reliever Garrett Brunette (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Trailblazers allowing 3 runs in two innings.

Worcester State will next host Nichols College on Monday at 5pm while MCLA travels to Dean College on Tuesday for a 3:30pm nonconference tilt.
